This research was prepared by Duke on behalf of the Apollo Alliance with support from the Rockefeller Foundation and Surdna Foundation to help inform the Apollo Alliance's Transportation Manufacturing Action Plan by mapping out the U.S. value chain for manufacturing rail cars and parts for passenger trains. The report identifies a healthy domestic supply base of 249 U.S. manufacturing locations across 35 states, but also identifies gaps in domestic capabilities and areas in which U.S.-based firms should pursue higher-value activities such as design, engineering and systems integration. Marcy Lowe gave a presentation (linked below) “Passenger and Transit Rail Vehicles: The U.S. Supply Chain” on May 4, 2010, at the Good Jobs, Green Jobs conference held in May in Washington, D.C. The conference was dedicated to transforming ideas into action and building a revitalized, green economy that creates good jobs, reduces global warming, and preserves America’s economic and environmental security. Lowe also gave a presentation on U.S. Passenger and Transit Rail Equipment Manufacture: Final Data for the Transportation Manufacturing Action Plan (TMAP) Task Force Meeting #3, convened by The Apollo Alliance on June 23, 2010 in Washington, DC.
